During the week you will have many possibilities to discover, observe and  photograph the mammals of the wild taiga of Finland. The king of the forest, the brown bear, you will observe spending 4 nights in comfortable and secure hides which are equipped with toilet, sleeping places and hearing system. You might also see wolverine, or even hear or see a wolf!

Finland and especially the region of Kainuu is famous for its great predators and others mammals. There are about 2500 bears, 250 wolves, 350  wolverines, 2 000 lynxes, thousands of elks, foxes, minks, around 10 000 beavers, 850 wild forest reindeers and some hundreds of endangered flying squirrels in Finland. Beside the mammals also birds of the taiga forest are  interesting: crossbill, Siberian Jay, swan, red and black throated divers, owls. Depending on the season birds will be more or less active – the most active  they are in spring/spring summer time from end of April until mid June.

1st Day: Arrival in Kajaani

Transfer to the accommodation near the Russian border,  dinner.

2nd Day: Hike in a bear forest and bear watching

After breakfast, we will discover the Finnish forest having a nature and culture  walk of about 2-3h. Dinner will be served at 4 pm. Around 5 pm, information about the hide and about the bears. Departure for the comfortable bear hide night (hiking 700 m through the forest). All night in the hide.

3rd Day: Rest/free time and Bear hides

After breakfast you can enjoy a short bird trip , have  some rest before the next night for bear watching. Departure after early dinner to the bear hides.

4th Day: Wild forest reindeer/moose (elk)

Today we will discover the life of the wild forest reindeer, and the environment  of beaver as well as the way the moose lives. We will leave for an evening trip    to observe moose and wild forest reindeer. We will come back during the night for the accommodation.

5th Day: Morning rest and bear/wolverine watching

We will enjoy the quietness of the accommodation or discover the Lentiira village, after meal a new night for bear and wolverine watching.

6th Day: Petola and Kuhmo,

After the breakfast and some time for resting we will have one hour reserved  for Petola predator centre visit, a beautiful exhibition with lots of information about the predators of Finland. In the evening we will go for a elk safari. Accommodation– arriving late in the night.

7th Day: Wolverine and other predators

After returning late last night we will have a day for resting/checking the  photos taken during the week. Hoping for one more beautiful night with the  predators around the hides, after the meal we will go once more to the hide . Perhaps this time, if not already before, a wolverine and wolves arrive…

8th Day: Departure day

breakfast and departure for airport.

Equipment recommanded:  warm clothes according to weather forecasting, binoculars, video and  camera, tripod and head of tripod, gloves and hat. Rubber boots/ waterproof warm hight shoes. Woollen socks, chemicals warmer.
Program can be subject to changes depending on the season and the weather conditions (F.ex: some animals don’t move around in the rain). And also to get the best possible places and opportunities to see the animals we might make some plans new. Animals are totally wild and move free. We keep the right to change the order and places of the program. Most of the observation happens from the car (elk and reindeer) or hides (bears), but also by being outside and hiking, this is why warm clothing is recommended.
